Be Safe As is a female founded and Adelaide based start up for the purpose of personal safety. BSA specialises in finding and offering the best personal safety products and devices. we are passionate about curbing assault and drink spiking through detection and protection. Drink spiking with GHB is growing in occurrence, especially post covid lockdowns and amongst the mature online dating community who are largely unaware of their vulnerability. (GHB is VERY different to well known Ketamine, Rohypnol and Benzodiazapine-based drugs, primarily used for spiking in past). BSA has exclusivity to offer Australian and New Zealanders a product that detects a GHB spiked drink instantly! Changes colour upon contact with a spiked beverage, even without the presence of alcohol. It’s a sticker, so can be transferred and later removed from a phone case or wallet, end of lipstick.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics An estimated 8 million Australians (41%) have experienced violence (physical and/or sexual) since the age of 15, including:
31% of women and 42% of men who have experienced physical violence
22% of women and 6.1% of men who have experienced sexual violence
Drink spiking is a serious concern in Australia. According to a study conducted by the Australian Institute of Criminology, around 3.5% of Australians reported experiencing drink spiking at least once in their lives. As stated by POLICE, majority of spiking incidents don’t become part of official statistics
The most commonly used substances for drink spiking are alcohol and illicit drugs, such as GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) and Rohypnol. These drugs can cause intoxication, memory loss, and incapacitation, making it easier for perpetrators to take advantage of their victims.
Drink spiking incidents are often under reported due to various factors, including victims not realizing that their drinks have been tampered with or feeling embarrassed or ashamed to come forward. Encouragingly, efforts have been made to raise awareness and improve reporting mechanisms to tackle the issue effectively.
A recent Australian study found that three-quarters of users surveyed experienced online sexual violence, while one-third reported in-person incidents. This highlights the alarming prevalence of sexual violence in Australia and underscores the need for greater awareness and prevention efforts.
Of those who experience drink spiking and subsequent sexual assault, four out of five are women. This is a disturbing statistic that reflects the gendered nature of this issue. Women are at greater risk of being targeted by perpetrators, and it is important for society to recognize and address this fact.
According to data from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, there has been a steady increase in reports of drink or food spiking in recent years. In the year to June 2022, NSW Police received 186 reports, compared to 115 between July 2018 – June 2019 and 119 in 2017-2018. This data highlights the growing prevalence of drink spiking and the need for greater awareness and prevention efforts.
There are several steps that people can take to protect themselves from drink spiking. ALL until now, put the responsibility firmly in the potential victims wheelhouse; Firstly, it is important to not leave your drink unattended. If you need to leave your drink, ask a trusted friend to keep an eye on it for you. Secondly, it is advisable to avoid accepting drinks from strangers or people you do not know well. Thirdly, be wary of accepting drinks that you did not see being poured or that were not opened in front of you. Now you can test your drink to reduce the risk if accepting a drink you have not had full purview over. Lastly, if you suspect that your drink has been spiked, do not consume it and seek medical attention immediately.
In conclusion, drink spiking is a serious issue that can have serious consequences for victims. The statistics show that women are at greater risk, and it is important for society to recognize and address this fact. By taking steps to protect themselves and by being vigilant, people can reduce their risk of falling victim to drink spiking. TEST YOUR DRINK.
